Boxing glove size is measured in ounces (oz), which indicates the weight of the glove and the amount of padding. Heavier gloves have more padding and are used for sparring; lighter gloves are used for bag work and mitt training. This guide covers the Superare S40 and S50 — the two models we stock.
Which Weight to Choose
14 oz
Suited for intermediate and advanced training, pad work, and light sparring. Provides a balance between speed and protection. Recommended for fighters in the 60–80 kg range or those prioritising speed and feedback over maximum padding.
16 oz Velcro
Heavier padding for medium to heavy sparring and pad work. The velcro closure allows quick on and off without assistance. Recommended for fighters in the 65–100 kg range or anyone training with a partner regularly.
16 oz Lace-Up
The most secure fit available. Lace-up gloves require assistance to put on but provide a tighter, more consistent wrist position. Used by professional fighters and serious sparring practitioners. Recommended for fighters 85 kg and above, or anyone who prioritises wrist support over convenience.

S40 vs S50 — Which Model
Superare S40
Compact, close-fitting profile. Designed for technical boxing — mitt work, combination training, and sparring where hand position and feedback matter. Better suited for fighters with narrower hands or those who prefer a snug fit without hand wraps.
Superare S50
Wider internal cavity. Built for fighters who train with hand wraps or have broader hands. More comfortable during extended bag sessions. The S50 Game Changer variant adds additional knuckle volume for high-frequency training.
Additional Notes
Hand wraps: Always wear hand wraps under your gloves. They protect the small bones in your hand and affect the internal fit — if you train with wraps, account for that when choosing between the S40 and S50.
Break-in period: Italian leather gloves are stiff when new. The leather softens and moulds to your hand over the first 10 to 15 sessions. This is normal — it is a property of genuine leather, not a defect.
Sparring vs. bag work: Use 16 oz for sparring to reduce impact on your partner. 14 oz is appropriate for bag work and mitt training where you are not making contact with another person.
