Garry St. Leger: From Brooklyn’s Mats to Global Grappling Legacy
The story doesn’t start in a stadium.
It starts in a small dojo in Brooklyn, where a young boy named Garry St. Leger trained judo with his twin brother. Their coach? Olympic-level trainer Parnel Legros. Their goal? Unknown. But the spark was there.
That spark grew into something powerful.
A Warrior’s Rise
Garry didn’t just train. He transformed.
From his earliest competitions, he stood out—fast, technical, and impossible to shake off. In time, he became a three-time U.S. national judo champion, a Pan-American medalist, and even the 2008 Olympic alternate for Team USA. He competed at the highest level, including the 2010 World Championships, earning global recognition.
But what truly defined him wasn't the medals—it was his movement.
Fluent, precise, dangerous. Every throw told a story.
“You don’t overpower people,” Garry said. “You out-position them.”
A New Path: Judo Meets Jiu-Jitsu
Most would stop after that kind of success.
Garry didn’t.
He stepped into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—not to collect more titles, but to evolve.
He trained under Renzo Gracie and John Danaher, and earned his black belt in BJJ. He began teaching, coaching, and leading from the front at Kano Martial Arts NYC.
He didn’t just bring judo into BJJ—he rewrote the blueprint.
His techniques became the bridge between takedowns and submissions. His instructionals like “Effective Transitions” are used by grapplers worldwide who want a tactical edge.

Why His Story Matters
Garry St. Leger shows us something many forget:
-
That greatness comes from discipline, not shortcuts.
-
That skill is earned, not given.
-
That true champions never stop learning.
His legacy isn’t just on podiums—it’s in every fighter he teaches, and now in every Gi we've built together.
If you train to become more than just good—if you train to become a problem—
you’re already part of this legacy.
