Are Ripstop Gis IBJJF Legal? A Dated 2026 Guide
Last updated: 6 October 2026
Why everyone keeps asking about ripstop
If you have ever searched "are ripstop gis IBJJF legal" you probably found three different answers on the first page. One forum says ripstop is fine, another says it gets you sent back at the gi check, and a third tells a story about a friend who competed in one at a local open with no problem at all.
It's one of the most common questions in jiu jitsu gear, so we went straight to the source. This guide is based on the official IBJJF uniform rules and the IBJJF Uniform Manual for manufacturers, the rules that came into effect after the 2024 Gi World Championships. We dated it on purpose, because gi rules do change and old blog posts tend to hang around for years.
Short version first, then the details.
The short answer: ripstop pants yes, ripstop jacket no
Under the current IBJJF rules, ripstop is allowed for gi pants but not for the gi jacket.
The IBJJF manual is actually very clear on this once you read it. For the pants, it says twill or ripstop construction is mandatory. For the jacket, it says the fabric must be an embossed braided weave (think pearl weave, gold weave and similar) so your opponent can grip it, and it rules out canvas and twill jackets completly.
So a ripstop top will not pass an IBJJF gi check, but ripstop pants paired with a woven jacket are perfectly normal. That is also why you see so many competitors in ripstop pants at big events.

What the IBJJF rules actually say about your gi
Fabric is only one part of the gi check. Here is what inspectors look at, based on the IBJJF uniform page and manual.
The jacket has to be woven cotton or a cotton like fabric that is not so thick or hard that it stops your opponent from gripping it. The collar can have EVA foam inside, as long as it stays within the official size and stiffness limits. Lapel thickness is checked at 1.3 cm and collar width at 5 cm.
The jacket must reach your thighs, and the sleeves can sit no more than 2 cm from your wrist with your arm stretched straight out in front of you. The sleeve opening needs at least 7 cm of space along its full length.
The pants must come to no more than 2 cm above the ankle bone. A lot of older articles still say 5 cm, which is one reason people get confused, so go by the current 2 cm rule.
Colour is strict too. Only white, royal blue or black are allowed, the jacket and pants must match, and the collar cannot be a different colour from the rest of the top. Patches must be cotton, properly stitched, and only in the approved areas.
Men cannot wear a shirt under the jacket or any pants under the gi pants. Women must wear a tight elastic top under the jacket and may wear elastic leggings shorter than the gi pants. And the gi has to be clean, dry and free of tears or repairs.
Why the forum answers conflict
Most of the confusion comes from three things.
First, timing. A lot of popular posts were written before IBJJF released its updated uniform manual, which took effect after the 2024 Gi Worlds. Some older articles even mention ripstop lapels being accepted, but the current manual asks for a braided weave jacket, so it is not worth risking it.
Second, people mix up the jacket and the pants. When someone says "I competed in ripstop and it was fine", they almost always mean ripstop pants with a normal pearl weave top. That is legal, so their story is true, it just doesn't apply to a ripstop jacket.
Third, different organisations have different rules. Smaller local tournaments that are not run under IBJJF may let things slide that would get flagged at an IBJJF event. If you are entering an IBJJF tournament, the IBJJF rules are the only ones that matter on the day.
Why does IBJJF care so much about the jacket? Ripstop is light and very hard to tear, which is great for pants, but on a jacket it can make grips slippery and harder to hold. The braided weave rule exists so both athletes have a fair grip on each other.
How to choose a competition legal gi
When you shop for a gi you plan to compete in, a few details on the product page tell you most of what you need to know.
Look at the jacket weave first. Pearl weave, gold weave, single weave and double weave are all braided constructions. If a jacket is described as ripstop, canvas or twill, keep it for training only.
Then check the jacket weight. IBJJF allows 380 to 650 g/m², so most standard competition gis around 400 to 550 GSM sit comfortably inside that range.
For the pants, look for twill (often called drill) or ripstop, and a fabric weight between 220 and 300 g/m². Pants that are much heavier than that can be a problem under the current manual.
Finally, think about colour. White, royal blue and black are the only safe choices. Navy, grey, camo, unbleached or any colour with contrast lapels should be treated as training gis unless the event confirms otherwise.
How to pass the gi check without stress
Most failed gi checks are about fit, not fabric. A few simple habits save a lot of panic before your first match.
  1. Try the full gi on a week before the event, after it has been washed a few times, and check sleeve and pant length with your arms and legs straight.
  2. Make sure the jacket, pants and collar are all the same legal colour: white, royal blue or black.
  3. Look over your patches. Anything loose, half stitched or in the wrong area can be removed by the inspector.
  4. Bring a second clean gi in your bag if you can. If one fails, you have a backup ready.
  5. Wash it, dry it fully, and check for small tears or old repairs at the knees and cuffs.
IBJJF also publishes a short gi checker video on its uniform page, which is worth two minutes of your time before any big event.
Frequently asked questions
Are ripstop gi pants IBJJF legal?
Yes. The IBJJF manual says gi pants must use twill or ripstop construction, between 220 and 300 g/m², with at least 55% cotton or other cellulose fibre. They still need to match your jacket colour.
Can I compete in a ripstop gi jacket at IBJJF events?
No. The jacket must be an embossed braided weave like pearl weave, so a ripstop top will not pass the gi check.
Is a lightweight gi IBJJF legal?
It can be, as long as the jacket is a braided weave of at least 380 g/m² and the pants follow the pant rules. Weight alone does not make a gi legal or illegal.
How long should my gi pants be for IBJJF?
No more than 2 cm above your ankle bone. Many older guides say 5 cm, but the current rule is 2 cm.
What colours are allowed at IBJJF tournaments?
White, royal blue and black only, with the jacket, pants and collar all the same colour.
Are ripstop pants allowed in non IBJJF tournaments?
Usually yes, but every organisation sets its own rules, so check the rulebook of the event you are entering.
